Halsey Minor, founder of CNET is talking about buying Hialeah Park, a decaying, one-time temple of horse racing located outside Miami. Minor made his fortune taking CNET public in 1996 (CBS recently bought the company for $1.8 billion). Now he wants to get into professional sports, and like his dot-com billionaire peer Marc Cuban, he’s not afraid to openly pick on the old-timers in the industry he’s busting into...
The Baltimore Sun recently ran a piece on Minor and quoted him stomping on Frank Stronach, the Canadian magnate who started auto parts maker Magna International (rumored at one point to be buying Chrysler, before Cerberus picked up the company) and Magna Entertainment, which owns horse racing parks around the country — including Pimlico, Santa Anita and Gulfstream.
"I'm actually very angry that so much of racing has fallen into his hands," Minor said. "You can't blame one person for racing's ills, but ... Stronach is an object lesson in what shouldn't be done. He has been about anything but racing - slots, movie theaters, shopping malls."
The big fight involves whether racing venues should be gambling dens — Stronach is a fan of slot machines in the parks — or places for families to watch horses run in circles. Despite his background, Minor doesn’t seem to be pushing for any kind of technology to be brought into the Hialeah.
